hen we talked about his snare, the only details the Neapolitan percussionist Leonardo De Lorenzo gave us were the dimensions. In general terms, we were being asked to create something artistic on a Parthenopean theme, without falling foul of the more hackneyed clichés.

NOTES & CURIOSITIES

A mysterious package

Leonardo wanted a surprise and he did everything he could to make sure he got one. He didn’t want any information or photos while we were working, and not even when we’d finished.

Without telling him, we sent him a mysterious package. It looked like it contained a circular table saw, but Respighi Drums on the label as sender left little doubt as to what it really contained.

Our efforts were rewarded by his amazement and joy when he saw his new instrument for the first time. He shared this moment with us and all his friends and colleagues who were connected to Facebook at the time.

We would like to thank him and all those who trust us completely with their projects.

Le riggiole or Neapolitan tiles

The hand painted decorations were inspired by Neapolitan riggiole. These tiles have been widely used since the eighteenth century and can be found throughout Campania, especially on the Amalfi coast.

The Pompeian red together with sky-blue and white are color combinations typically used in the frescos and antique homes of the Ercolano and Vesuvio areas.
